2017 was the year I learned about chapbook submissions and what happens when one is accepted—the publisher provides the author with a laundry list of to-do’s! This can be daunting and overwhelming for a writer. But my services can help here too, researching venues for public readings, writing news releases, and coaching about social media tools.
It is so rewarding for me to be able to call a client and share good news. It is the best part of my job. 2017 was a banner year for submission acceptances: 18 submissions of poetry, fiction and and nonfiction were accepted for publication. One was selected to be reprinted in an anthology. That’s another aspect of the business that I’ve learned--having a piece published on-line, while thrilling in its own right, sometimes leads to getting that same piece included in the journal’s annual print edition or “editor’s choice” edition. More good news to share!
I am spreading my own wings in 2018. Client and friend Sharon H. Smith created Birdland Journal in 2014 as a place where she could feature and celebrate the writers from her Laguna Writers group as well as those who participated in her Birdland writing retreats. Now she is opening the journal to Northern California writers and has invited me to be her co-editor. We are excited to be embarking on this new endeavor together.
